Weekend Guide: Antique Cars, Suicide Prevention, Israel Street Festival

Things to do in Fairfax City this weekend.

There's plenty of events to keep you busy in and around Fairfax City this weekend. Read on for the highlights.

  • 5K Walk and Candlelight Vigil for Awareness and Prevention of Suicide

The Fairfax Presbyterian Youth Group is sponsoring a 5K Walk and Candlelight Vigil to promote awareness and prevention of suicide in our community.  The youth are particularly concerned with the growing problem of teen suicide in our neighborhood schools.  The event is open to everyone in the community.  The event is free and any donotions made will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

Registration for the 5K Walk begins at 4 pm.  Online registration can also be made through the church website at: www.fairfaxpresbyterian.org  The walk will be from 5-6:30 p.m. through Fairfax City. Following the walk, there will be speakers from AFSP, a candlelight vigil and other activities. 

Saturday, 5-6:30 p.m. Free.

  • Antique Car Show

The Northern Virginia Early Ford V8 Club, in association with the City of Fairfax and the Downtown Fairfax Business Coalition sponsor the Antique Car Show. This is the 14th year the show has been staged and the numbers, and quality of cars continues to increase.
The show is open to all types of cars and vehicles, the only stipulation is that they be over 25 years old.
Expect activities to entertain family, car owners and spectators. The Speedy Toliver and the Old Time New String Blue Grass Band will be on hand to play. St. Leo's Knight's of Columbus will be providing food all day. A disassembled Model T Ford will be assembled and driven in 15 minutes.

  • Visions of Summer

High-spirited youth, innocent love, heroic music and lively dance mingle in this colorful and vibrant vision of summer’s warmth and glow. The Main Street Community Band, Geoffrey Seffens, Conductor, creates a “vibrant spirit in the air” with this family program of classical pieces and popular tunes, plus blues, jazz, marches, and even a tango. Works include the City of Fairfax March (Wayland), The Homefront: Memories of World War II (Christensen), Porgy and Bess (Gershwin), A Little Tango Music (Gorb), and Midway March (Williams).

Saturday. W.T. Woodson High School, 8-9:30 p.m. Free.

  • Israel Street Festival

Activities start at 1 p.m. The event culminates in a showing of "Lost Islands" at Rave Fairfax Corner 14, 5:15 p.m. Entertainment highlights include:

Axum - an Ethiopian-Yemenite-Israeli reggae group
Krav Maga, self-defense demonstration
Hora DC, Israeli dance performance group
JCCNV Dance Company, performing to Israeli music
Gesher Makeylah and The Gesher Klezmer Players
Israeli sing-along with Shirat Beth Emeth and Olam Tikvah Chorale
Kol Nova Youth Choir
