Will Hurricane Idalia Remnants Spoil VA’s Labor Day? Latest Forecast

There are still coastal flood advisories in some areas, and rip current risks at VA beaches. Take a look at the Labor Day weekend forecast.

VIRGINIA — After Idalia slammed Florida's Big Bend area as a Category 3 hurricane, leaving debris and flooding in its wake, the storm had faded off the Carolinas by Thursday. Virginia residents will have an eye on the weather this Labor Day weekend as they head to the beach, the park, or to events to celebrate the unofficial end of summer.

By comparison, the Baltimore-Washington region has been unaffected by the storm. Skies were sunny with a few scattered clouds and a high temperature of 83 degrees late Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

With the overnight temperature expected to reach a low of 53, NWS predicted that clear skies and warm weather would continue on Friday and extend through the Labor Day weekend and beyond, with the thermometer in the 80s and 90s.

Overall, forecasters said Franklin and Idalia's impacts on weather in Virginia should be limited to a bit of rough surf and rip current risks this Labor Day weekend.

A high surf advisory is in effect in the Virginia Beach area until 4 p.m. Friday, a coastal flood advisory is in place until Friday at 2 p.m. and rip currents are a risk through Thursday evening.

No hazardous weather was expected through Wednesday for the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay, Tidal Potomac River, and I-95 corridor through central Maryland, Northern Virginia, and District of Columbia, according to the NWS forecast.

"Sunshine and beautiful" was how the Accuweather forecast described the five-day outlook.

Franklin, which has been responsible for the rough surf and dangerous rip currents along parts of the East Coast this week, has reduced in strength as it moves northeast of Bermuda. Meanwhile, the remnants of Idalia should remains south of the Mid-Atlantic.

"Strengthening high pressure slowly meandering east across the the Great Lakes will extend its axis south into our region on Thursday," said the National Weather Service. "This will help to steer Idalia away from our region and push it offshore of the Carolinas."

Friday was expected to be sunny and pleasant with a high of 81 and a low of 56.

Temperatures would climb from 81 during the day on Friday to 96 on Monday, according to Accuweather. The only hint of clouds expected for weekend would come on Saturday, when the skies would be mostly sunny.

On Sunday, the weather would become sunny, hot and more humid, with a high of 92 and a low of 66. Monday would be humid and even hotter, with the mercury rising to 96 degrees.

Even as Idalia continued northward, there was just a 2 percent chance of rain on Sunday and and 1 percent on Monday.
