DC, NoVA Weather: Snow In Forecast After Another Springlike Day

The D.C. area could get an inch or two of snow Sunday morning, while several inches of snow is in the forecast for other parts of Virginia.

VIRGINIA/DC — Parts of the Washington, D.C., region could get an inch or two of snow Sunday morning, while several inches of snow is in the forecast for parts of central Virginia and the Blue Ridge Mountains, according to the National Weather Service.

A mix of rain and snow is forecast to arrive in the immediate D.C. area late Saturday night after another day of springlike weather, with high temperatures expected near 60.

The winter weather could affect travel for people going to Super Bowl parties on Sunday, especially in the western suburbs.

A mix of rain and snow is expected to turn to all snow by early Sunday morning. "At least occasional light snow is a good bet through sunrise, with some light accumulation possible, especially on grassy and elevated surfaces," The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang said Saturday morning.

The NWS issued a winter storm watch for areas west of Charlottesville and south of Harrisonburg, where snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are expected, with locally up to 8 inches possible.

In these areas of the Blue Ridge Mountains, precipitation is expected to arrive before midnight as a mix of rain and snow before becoming all snow during the overnight hours. Snow could become heavy at times Sunday morning, the NWS said.

In D.C. and the close-in suburbs, an inch or two is possible. Most accumulation will be on grassy areas in these areas, but the western suburbs could see some travel impacts. Snow could be heavy between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday and is expected to move out by noon Sunday.

The Virginia State Police suggested that residents planning to drive to Super Bowl parties on Sunday or be on the road for other reasons to keep up-to-date on weather conditions in their area. The latest road conditions can be found at www.511virginia.org.

"Although it may not be a major snowstorm, there could be enough snow to make for slippery travel on Sunday for cities such as Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Richmond, Virginia, as people may be out and about going over to friends' houses to view the big game later in the evening," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dan Pydynowski said in a statement Saturday.

Here's the NWS forecast for the close-in suburbs of D.C. for the next few days:
