Falls Church Student Named Broadcom MASTERS Finalist

Nathaniel Sperry from Falls Church was selected as one of 30 finalists in the 2013 Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars) and will showcase his project in Washington, D.C. at the end of the month. 

Sperry, a seventh-grader at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School, was selected for his project When Carrots Turn Green….Literally! He was selected out of 1,695 applicants nationwide. 

Broadcom MASTERS is a national science, technology, engineering, and math competition for U.S. 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The schools will also benefit from the competition. Broadcom Foundation and Elmer’s® Products, Inc., the 2013 Broadcom MASTERS official classroom, will award each finalist classroom with merchandise, rewards and a $250 Walmart gift card, and  Broadcom Foundation will give each finalist school $1,000. Broadcom Foundation and Elmer’s will contribute more than $500,000 in prizes, awards and rebates to nominees, entrants, semifinalists, finalists, and their teachers and schools, according to Broadcom. 

All of the finalists will be presenting their projects to the public in a project showcase at the National Geographic Museum in Washington, DC on Sept. 28. Winners will be announced on Oct. 1.
