Falls Church's Birch & Broad Shopping Center Wins Top Design Award

FALLS CHURCH, VA — Birch & Broad, a newly renovated and rebranded shopping center on West Broad Street in Falls Church, has won a top design award.

The shopping center, owned by Federal Realty Investment Trust, won a Silver International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) Global Design and Development Award, Federal Realty said Friday.

Birch & Broad won the Silver award in the category of renovations/expansions for projects under 150,000 square feet. The international awards recognize the top design and development trends of retail projects and tenant design.

“Birch & Broad is a premier destination for residents and visitors to the City of Falls Church that hosts a vibrant combination of shopping, dining, and service providers to appeal to customers of all ages and interests,” Deirdre Johnson, senior vice president of asset management for Federal Realty, said in a statement.

The shopping center, formerly known as Falls Plaza, now features “attractive aesthetics and thoughtful outdoor areas to encourage social gatherings and connections year-round,” Johnson said.

Birch & Broad underwent a complete renovation that was completed in December 2021. It included a façade renovation, new signage, lighting and outdoor amenity areas with enhanced landscaping. Several new businesses also have opened at the shopping center over the past two years, including Taco Rock, Crumbl Cookies, Bolay, and Aqua-Tots Swim School.

Along with new food and beverage options, the fully leased shopping center features curated mural artwork by local artist BroCoLoco located next to the CVS. Other new features include bike parking, strategically placed gas heaters and an outdoor fireplace area.
