Some of the chilliest temperatures this fall will arrive overnight, with the first frost of the season expected early Wednesday, the National Weather Service announced Tuesday.

Northern Virginia is under a Frost Advisory Wednesday from 3-9 a.m., the National Weather Service warned Tuesday afternoon. Sensitive outdoor plans may be killed if you don't bring them inside or cover them, the weather service advised.

Temperatures are expected to plunge to 32 to 36 degrees in Northern Virginia and the metro DC area. The area west of the suburbs is under a freeze warning.

Here's a look at temperatures for the next few days, from the NWS forecast:

  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny. Highs in the mid 50s. North winds around 5 mph.
  • Wednesday night: Mostly cloudy. Lows in the mid 40s. East winds around 5 mph.
  • Thursday: Showers likely in the afternoon. Highs in the lower 60s. South winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 60 percent.
  • Thursday night: Mostly cloudy with a 50 percent chance of showers. Lows in the upper 40s.
  • Friday: Mostly sunny. Highs around 60.
  • Friday night: Partly cloudy. Lows in the mid 40s.
