General Dynamics Gets GSA Contract

Falls Church-based information technology company selected to develop infrastructure for Department of Homeland Security.

Over the next seven-years, General Dynamics will be tasked with developing an integrated network infrastructure for the consolidated Department of Homeland Security Southeast Washington, D.C. headquarters.

The United States General Services Administration (GAS) made the announcement about the more than $860 million contract awarded to work on the infrastructure of at the St. Elizabeths campus on Tuesday. The contract ensures the Homeland Security’s Technology Integration Program (TIP) will work in concert with campus construction and 22 other agencies under the security umbrella in one central location.

“We will begin work right away,” Mark Meudt, spokesman for General Dynamics said Tuesday. “This is a standard government contract. We responded with our bid and they thought we were the best for what they wanted to do.”

GSA's Federal Systems Integration and Management Center awarded the contract as part of the Alliant government wide acquisition contract. Meudt said one of the reasons General Dynamics was selected is because they are based in Fairfax County and their core business is in wide-scale information technology infrastructure. General Dynamics is currently involved in projects at the Pentagon, Department of Defense and is helping the Walter Reed Army Medical Center with the move to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Meudt said.

In a statement released Tuesday, GSA administrator Martha N. Johnson said: “The DHS St. Elizabeths campus will be a showcase for the value of integrating technology, people, and processes in a consolidated environment that will truly help DHS achieve its critical mission to protect the nation's security.”

Meudt said the contract helps the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area as a whole. He said this project would require several more employees with various backgrounds to make the project a reality.

“As a result of this award, we’re able to keep jobs in the Washington, D.C. area,” Meudt said.
