How Falls Church Voted In Senate District 37, Commonwealth's Attorney Primary

FALLS CHURCH, VA — Tuesday's primary election in Virginia determined Democratic candidates moving on to the Nov. 7 general election in the City of Falls Church.

City of Falls Church voters had two notable races on the ballot, including the Virginia Senate District 37 race between incumbent state Sen. Chap Petersen and challenger Saddam Salim. Salim was declared as the winner based on unofficial election results. With all but provisional ballots counted, Salim earned 53.84 percent of votes, while Petersen had 46.16 percent.

Another notable race was the reform-minded Commonwealth's Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti facing a challenge from Josh Katcher. Dehghani-Tafti was declared the winner and earned 56.64 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results not including provisional ballots.

In the Virginia Senate District 37 race, Salim won all three wards in the City of Falls Church. In the commonwealth's attorney election, Dehghani-Tafti won Falls Church's three wards.

001 - FIRST WARD (votes at Oak Street Elementary School)

  • Petersen: 34.08 percent, 242 votes
  • Salim: 65.92 percent, 468 votes

Commonwealth's Attorney

  • Katcher: 36.76 percent, 261 votes
  • Dehghani-Tafti: 63.24 percent, 449 votes

002 - SECOND WARD (votes at Falls Church Community Center, formerly Falls Green Apartments)

Virginia Senate District 37

  • Petersen: 41.41 percent, 323 votes
  • Salim: 58.59 percent, 457 votes

Commonwealth's Attorney

  • Katcher: 40.28 percent, 315 votes
  • Dehghani-Tafti: 59.72 percent, 467 votes

003 - THIRD WARD (votes at Falls Church Community Center)

Virginia Senate District 37

  • Petersen: 28.63 percent, 225 votes
  • Salim: 71.37 percent, 561 votes

Commonwealth's Attorney

  • Katcher: 29.24 percent, 231 votes
  • Dehghani-Tafti: 70.76 percent, 559 votes

While the City of Falls Church only had two primary elections, more will be on the ballot in November. The Nov. 7, 2023 general election will feature elections for three Falls Church City Council seats, three Falls Church School Board seats, Virginia Senate District 37, Virginia House District 13, Arlington County/Falls Church City Commonwealth's Attorney, and Arlington County/Falls Church City Clerk of the Court.
