Mason Earns Top 10 Rankings on Post’s School Challenge Index
The school finishes second amongst high schools in Virginia and sixth amongst schools in the D.C. metro area.

has earned another high ranking amongst area and national schools.
Mason is ranked second amongst high schools in Virginia and sixth amongst high schools in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area in Washington Post education reporter Jay Mathews’ annual Challenge Index.
According to The Washington Post, the index score is the number of college-level tests given at a school in 2011 divided by the number of graduates that year. Also noted are the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for free and reduced lunch (Subs. lunch), an indicator of poverty, and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called equity and excellence, (E&E). More than 170 public and private schools are on the local list; 1,900 are included nationally.

, Mason earned a top 20 ranking in the U.S. News and World Report “America’s Best High Schools,” placing 19th nationally. Mason came in first in Virginia amongst traditional public high schools and second overall behind . According to Matthews’ index, Mason is ranked 84th nationally.
