Scholarship For Nurse Aide Course Seeks To Fill NoVA Worker Shortage

Scholarships are helping nursing aides receive advanced nursing aide certification to fill workforce needs in Northern Virginia.

NORTHERN VIRGINIA — A scholarship for certified nursing aid education is being offered to help nursing homes in Northern Virginia address a workforce shortage.

LeadingAge Virginia, an association of nonprofit aging services organizations, announced it is taking applications for Advanced Certified Nursing Aide Course scholarships. There will be 15 scholarships worth $2,500 each awarded for the course running from Feb. 6 to April 17.

The course is an opportunity for certified nurse aides who wish to become an advanced certified nursing aide. Advanced Certified Nursing Aide curriculum includes virtual and classroom learning and clinical coursework in partnership with Northern Virginia Community College. There will also be clinical rotations happening at Goodwin House Alexandria.

Melissa Andrews, LeadingAge Virginia president and CEO, said the program will help fill critical workforce needs in aging services in Virginia.

"The past few years have put a spotlight on the current nursing workforce and the need for more health care workers in Virginia," said Andrews. "This grant allows us to support future health care providers in our own community through a program with best-in-class partners – a longtime LeadingAge Virginia member who is widely recognized for excellence and educational training."

The Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services awarded a grant to LeadingAge Virginia in 2021 to establish the scholarship program for 30 certified nursing aides. There have been 15 certified nursing aides who completed the course so far, and 15 additional nursing aides will be chosen. Those who complete the course can get an Advanced Certified Nurse Aide certification through the Virginia Board of Nursing.

Goodwin House Alexandria, a retirement community with assisted living, independent living and memory care, will be the location where students get hands-on experience.

"We are pleased to be champions of this program and highlight the compassionate people who make a difference in the lives of residents and the community," said Josh Bagley, interim executive director with The View Alexandria by Goodwin Living. "This exemplary, hands-on training through our partnership allows more CNAs to cultivate strong leadership skills and progress in their career path."

Certified nursing aides can apply for the scholarship by Jan. 27. More information about the course and eligibility is available on the program website.
