TJ Construction Won’t Cause Too Many Issues

Students will still be able to play outside while construction at Falls Church school in ongoing.

Construction at won’t cause too much of a headache when classes start back on Sept. 4.

Dr. Toni Jones, Falls Church City Public Schools superintendent, said contractors are expanding the school’s cafeteria and adding 15 new classrooms. The project, which started with a , is on schedule, she said.

The renovation project is expected to be completed before the start of the 2013-2014 academic year.

“The car drop off is being moved to Oak Street,” Jones said Monday. “The school division will begin sending out numerous notifications over the next two weeks. The Falls Church Police, School Facilities staff, transportation staff, Hess construction staff, and school management construction staff-ARCADIS, were all involved in working with Principal Palermo to map out an effective plan. Everybody will be hands-on during those first few days to make sure everything goes smoothly.”

In November, the FCCPS school board to complete the expansion project at the school. The $5 million project will make it possible for fifth graders to return to TJ from Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School.

Students will still be able to enjoy outdoor recess while construction is going on, Jones said. At the ground breaking a year ago, school board officials said there would be a designated area for kids to play while heavy machinery is in a separate area.

“All of the climbing play equipment is accessible for the children,” Jones said. “They will exit out the doors by the gym area and walk around the outside of the fenced area.”
