📰 News we're reading

1. Department seeks recruits as staffing challenges grow (farmvilleherald.com) — Farmville Police Department is trying to fill five open officer positions and is offering a $3,000 hiring bonus for certified candidates as it competes with higher-paying agencies. Local leaders say salaries are a town priority while new state rules and negative national perceptions shrink the applicant pool. Residents interested in serving can review requirements and apply through the town’s website.

2. Food pantry receives Food Lion grant (farmvilleherald.com) — Farmville’s FACES Food Pantry just received a $2,000 grant from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation to help meet rising demand for food assistance. Serving Farmville plus Prince Edward and Charlotte counties, the pantry has already helped 2,824 people this year and says the funding will go directly toward buying more food for local families.

3. Organization to provide housing (farmvilleherald.com) — A Farmville-raised caregiver is launching Kiana’s Serenity House to provide fully furnished, supportive housing in Prince Edward County, with plans to expand into Cumberland and nearby areas. The program targets people facing barriers like low income, evictions, or past felonies, offering coaching, goal tracking, and help connecting to community resources. White is currently seeking donated beds, household goods, and personal care items to open the first homes.

4. US Capitol statue of teen civil rights leader Barbara Rose Johns to fill Robert E. Lee's place (sfchronicle.com) — Farmville’s own R.R. Moton High School is now forever linked to the U.S. Capitol, as a statue of student leader Barbara Rose Johns replaces Robert E. Lee as one of Virginia’s two representatives. The new statue honors her 1951 student strike in Farmville that helped pave the way for Brown v. Board of Education and school desegregation nationwide.
