Victims In Fatal Fredericksburg Shooting Knew Each Other: Police

A man has died and a woman was critically injured in a Fredericksburg shooting. Deputies at the scene heard a single gunshot.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — The two people involved in a shooting on Sunday in Fredericksburg are a 71-year-old man, who died, and a 68-year-old woman, who remains hospitalized in critical condition, the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office said.

The next of kin for the deceased has been notified. The two people involved in the shootings were known to each other, investigators said.

At this time, the names of those involved are not being released pending further investigation.

"Our sincere sympathies are with the families of those affected by this tragic incident," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Deputies arrived around 10:15 a.m. Sunday for a welfare check at a home in the 9800 block of Fendale Lane, police said. They tried to make contact and heard a single gunshot, according to police.

A perimeter was established and the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team entered the home to find two people with gunshot wounds, police said, adding one was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and the other was pronounced dead at the scene.

“At this time, there is no threat to the public,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post Sunday afternoon.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police.
