FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Students at two Fredericksburg elementary schools were kept inside for a Thursday afternoon due to a shooting investigation taking place in close proximity to the schools, according to authorities.

Fredericksburg police officers were dispatched around 1:40 p.m. to investigate the report of two males discharging a firearm into the ground at a residence in the 100 block of Longstreet Avenue, according to the incident report. When police arrived, the two suspects entered the home.

"After several minutes of officers issuing commands, the individuals exited the residence," according to the report. "Upon further investigation, officers found evidence to corroborate the witness’s statement. All suspects are currently detained."

Around 1:45 p.m., Lafayette and Gladys West elementary schools issued an indoor instruction notice, after a school resource officer learned of the investigation underway nearby, police say. The order was later lifted.
