Murder Charge Filed In Fatal Shooting Of VA Man: Sheriff

Stafford County sheriff's deputies arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of 35-year-old Michael Dodge II of Caroline County on Tuesday.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — A 64-year-old Stafford man is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 35-year-old Michael Dodge II of Caroline County, according to authorities.

Deputies responded around midday on Tuesday to a residence in the 600 block of Mountain View Road for the report of a shooting.

"A caller advised that a co-worker was on scene at the location to perform work when they heard shots being fired over the open phone call with the co-worker," according to the incident report. "The caller advised that they were no longer able to get in contact with the co-worker. Deputies quickly responded to the scene and observed an adult male lying in the driveway unresponsive."

After noticing movement inside the home, deputies began speaking to a suspect. Following a brief standoff, they took Donald Thomas of Stafford into custody without incident, according to the report.

Investigators determined Dodge was on the property to perform work by a mortgage company, when he was shot multiple times by Thomas, according to the sheriff's office. Thomas was staying at residence at the time of the shooting.

Deputies arrested and charged Thomas with first-degree murder and unlawfully shooting or wounding in the commission of a felony. He is being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail, according to the sheriff's office.
