Annual Luminaria Draws Large Crowd
More than 15,300 candles lit in honor of Union soldiers buried at Marye's Heights.
Thousands of people and cars crammed Lafayette Street and residential side streets to get a glimpse of the annual luminaries at the Fredericksburg National Battlefield last night. More than 15,330 candles were lit inside white paper bags which lined the rows of headstones which have graced Marye's Heights for almost 150 years. Each candle honors a single soldier buried in the cemetery.
Visitors could walk on their own or follow a tour guide through a series of educational stops with park staff pointing out historical features and anecdotes.
Fredericksburg Patch was on hand, returning with this series of photographs of the solemn remembrance.
