Bank Robber Makes Getaway on Bicycle

The suspect rode away from Fredericksburg's Union First Market Bank just before noon on Nov. 9.

It's a first for Fredericksburg Police Department public information officer Natatia Bledsoe.

"In my 20 years working for the department, I never before have reported a bank robber leaving the scene of the crime on a bicycle," Bledsoe told Fredericksburg Patch.

That's what happened about 11:35 a.m. Saturday.

The suspect, described as a male in his mid-40s to mid-50s, entered Union First Market Bank at 725 Kenmore Ave. just before closing.  "He handed a note to a teller and implied he had a weapon," Bledsoe said.  He took an undisclosed amount of money, exited the bank and rode away on a bicycle.  "We believe it was a street bike, not a mountain bike," Bledsoe said.

The alleged bank robber was wearing a grey hooded zip-up sweat shirt, black pants or sweat pants and black square-framed sun glasses.

Fredericksburg police called in a tracking dog, but were unable to locate the suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Fredericksburg Police Department's non-emergency number at 540-373-3122.
