Driver Arrested After Crazy Chase

The man had previous DUI charges and was driving on a revoked license, officials said. Where an arrest is mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

A Spotsylvania resident eluded police while driving erratically, then abandoned the car and ran before finally being apprehended early Thursday morning.

Detectives patrolling in the Mayfield area about 12:20 a.m. observed a vehicle driven by a male subject who was known to be revoked from driving privileges due to a previous DUI offense, Natatia Bledsoe, City of Fredericksburg Police spokesperson, said.

The detectives followed the subject’s Pontiac Grand Prix as he left the
neighborhood and drove onto the Blue Grey Parkway and Plank Road westbound, swerving in the roadway multiple times and driving at erratic speed.

An officer in a marked patrol car caught up with the Pontiac as it proceeded onto Interstate 95 northbound, but the driver refused to pull over, Bledsoe said.

The Pontiac exited I95 at Route 17, drove back into the city over the Falmouth Bridge, continued on Route 1 southbound and headed back into Mayfield.

During this circling of the city, the Pontiac’s driver struck a curb on two different occasions and flattened a front tire, Bledsoe said.

The driver finally made an abrupt and abandoned the car in the front yard of a house in the 200 block of Duke.

The driver ran from the vehicle and jumped over a fence into a back yard, where officers surrounded him and ordered him to the ground. He eventually complied, and was taken into custody, Bledsoe said.

A vial containing suspected PCP was found and seized for evidence, she said.

Christopher Lewis, 32, of Spotsylvania was arrested for DUID, driving while revoked (DUI related), resisting arrest, felony eluding, leaving the scene of an accident, and possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute.

He was incarcerated at the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
