Driver Assaulting Passenger Causes 4-Vehicle Crash In Stafford County: Police

A driver was assaulting his passenger when he caused a four-vehicle crash that shut down a Stafford roadway for six hours, police said.

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — Authorities said a driver was assaulting his passenger when he caused a four-vehicle crash in Stafford County on Sunday afternoon. The crash shut down Garrisonville Road and Shelton Shop Road for more than six hours.

The driver and the passenger received treatment at an area hospital for injuries suffered in the crash. They were later released.

The driver is charged with reckless driving and two counts of assault and battery. He is being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail. The Stafford County Sheriff's Office has not released any identifying information about the driver, including his name or age.

If convicted of all charges, the driver could face up to three years in prison, based on Virginia's sentencing guidelines.

The crash occurred around 12:26 p.m. on Sunday at the intersection of Garrisonville Road and Shelton Shop Road.

"The initial investigation revealed the striking vehicle’s driver was having an altercation with his passenger," the sheriff's office said in a release. "During the altercation, the driver caused the four-vehicle crash."

Authorities did not provide any additional information about the crash.
