FREDERICKSBURG, VA — A Fredericksburg man’s decision to spend an extra dollar on the Virginia Lottery ticket he purchased for the Jan. 20 Powerball drawing tripled his $50,000 prize to $150,000 in winnings.

John Sarwari bought his winning Powerball ticket at the CVS at 5832 Harrison Road in Fredericksburg. Using Easy Pick, he let the computer randomly select the numbers on his ticket.

Four of those numbers and the Powerball number turned out to be winners for Sarwari, netting him a $50,000 prize. But, because he spent an extra $1 for Power Play when he bought his ticket, the prize was tripled to $150,000.

Sarwari, who works in the medical field, told Virginia Lottery officials he had no immediate plans for his $150,000 windfall.

All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia. Sarwari lives in Spotsylvania County, which received more than $16.1 million in Virginia Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year.

Powerball drawings take place at 10:59 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, and the overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 25.
