Fredericksburg Powerball Winners Donate $4M Locally

The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region is the beneficiary of local lottery winners' generosity.  Dave and Nancy Honeywell donated $4 million of their Powerball jackpot to the Fredericksburg based non-profit.

The Honeywells won the second-largest prize ever awarded by the Virginia Lottery.  Dave had purchased the ticket from one of Virginia Lottery’s two Lottery Express machines in the atrium of Richmond Airport as he was leaving on a business trip.

The Honeywell's chose the one-time cash option of $136.4 million before taxes, and received their check on Valentine's Day from Virginia Lottery officials.

The Honeywells "will establish a donor-advised fund that will give them oversight into how the money is used, Teri McNally, Community Foundation executive director," told NewsTalk1230 WFVA.

"Money can change the direction of a program or the number of people being served," McNally said. "You may have served 100 people in the past, now you may be able to serve 500," she said.

Dave and Nancy both work for the Department of Defense, where he's a computer scientist and she’s a project manager. Thursday was Dave's last day of work, NBC 4 reported.

"The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region is a nonprofit, public charity established by local community leaders created by and for the people of Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, Caroline counties and the City of Fredericksburg," the charity's website says. "We are a collection of many different charitable funds, each separately accounted for, and each with its own design and purpose."
