Historic Federal-Style Bank Building Hits the Market

Two-story structure in downtown Fredericksburg dates to 1820.

A nearly 200-year-old building in the heart of historic downtown Fredericksburg is up for sale.

Known as the National Bank Building, the two-story structure stands at the intersection of Princess and George streets. The half-acre property. with 22 parking spaces, includes another parcel at the corner of George and Charles streets

The National Bank Building is 6,410 square feet with a full basement. Its architectural style is Federal with brick walls and chimneys, sandstone details, a slate roof and wood-trimmed windows.

The bank building was commissioned by the Farmers Bank of Fredericksburg in 1819 and completed in 1820, according to Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer, the real estate firm that’s handling the sale of the building. Rooms in the rear and on the second floor were used to house the bank’s cashiers and their families until 1920.

During the Union occupation of Fredericksburg in the Civil War, the building was used as a headquarters by numerous Union military leaders, most notably Brig. Gen. Marsena Patrick, according to information from Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer. Patrick served as the provost marshal for the Army of the Potomac.
