Japanese Made Autos Recalled for Airbag Inflator Defect

Local dealership staff are meeting to determine the course of action for their customers.

Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda are recalling 3.4 million vehicles worldwide. "The airbag for the front passenger seat may not inflate correctly because of a manufacturing defect in the propellant used in the airbag inflator," Reuters reported.

Pohanka Nissan of Fredericksburg General Manager Tim Pohanka is meeting with his staff this morning to review the recall, determine exactly which cars are involved and form a plan of action for their customers.

The recall was announced Thursday by Takata, the world's second largest supplier of air bags and seat belts.

As a result of the defect, there is a risk of fires starting or of passengers being injured.  Toyota, Honda and Nissan told Reuters they have no reports of injuries or deaths because of the defect.

"Some non-Japanese automakers were also supplied with the faulty airbags, Takata spokesman Toyohiro Hishikawa [told Reuters]. He declined to name those automakers."
