STAFFORD, VA—A K-9 unit found a missing 82-year-old man with dementia early Friday, June 28, in the area of Chantilly Place, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office. The police dog, Gunner, successfully tracked the man from the scent of one of his shirts.

Around 2 a.m., police responded to the scene after a woman said her husband, who has dementia, was missing from the home. She said she put him to bed around 9:30 p.m. and then went to her own bedroom. Around 1:50 a.m., she woke up, walked into the living room and found the front door open. She then found her husband's bedroom empty and contacted police.

A K-9 unit, as well as a drone team, were dispatched. Using one of the man's shirts, the K-9 unit—Gunner and SCSO deputy Scott Myers—tracked him to a vehicle parked in a home driveway on Bridgewater Circle, where the man was found safe and escorted home.
