Law enforcement scrutinizing donations made by Chinese politician and others to the Virginia governor, according to NBC and CNN.

RICHMOND, VA — Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe is reportedly the subject of a year-long investigation into campaign donations, according to anonymous sources speaking to two news outlets.
The Department of Justice and FBI would not comment on the alleged investigation when asked by CNN and NBC News.
McAuliffe hasn't been approached by investigators, according to sources speaking to CNN, as well as comments by McAuliffe's lawyer.

"Neither the governor nor his former campaign has knowledge of this matter," lawyer Marc E. Elias said in a statement to media outlets.
The questioned donations include more than 100 from contributors who also gave to the Clinton Global Initiative, according to NBC News. The organization was founded by former President Bill Clinton, a McAuliffe ally, and the governor previously served of the initiative's board.

Also, federal officials are looking at specific donations from Wang Wenliang, a Chinese politician. Laws prohibit donations from foreign nationals, but Wang's spokesperson tells CNN he has permanent resident status in the U.S.
"Contributions to the campaign from Mr. Wang were completely lawful," Elias told NBC. "The governor will certainly cooperate with the government if he is contacted about it."
Fundraising questions come at the hight of the presidential campaign, with Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton facing sharp criticism about her fundraising from her primary challenger, Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.).
Virginia is also seen as a must-win state in the general election. McAuliffe is expected to work hard on the campaign trail as a surrogate and has been mentioned as a potential running mate.
And news of a fresh investigation in the governor's mansion comes as the U.S. Supreme Court weighs the fate of Virginia's last governor. Bob McDonnell has appealed a 2-year sentence for allegedly accepting gifts and loans in exchange for political favors while in office.
