Unauthorized Workers Take Food, Ice From Fredericksburg Kitchens: Inspection
During two health inspections in Fredericksburg, inspectors reported seeing unauthorized staff taking food and ice from restaurant kitchens.
FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Rappahannock Area Health District inspectors reported violations at 12 Fredericksburg food establishments they visited Aug. 18-21.
During an Aug. 21 inspection at Faith Baptist School, an inspector saw a non-food employee enter the kitchen without a hair restraint or washing their hands, open a hot holding unit and remove food, the inspector reported.
During the inspection, the inspector told the person in charge that non-kitchen personnel shouldn't be entering the kitchen. The inspector recommended installing a door as a barrier to the kitchen and to keep all doors closed at all times.

A similar incident happened during an Aug. 19 inspection at Lee Hill Elementary School. The inspector saw a school employee who didn't work in the kitchen enter the kitchen, rinse their hands off in the prep sink, and fill their personal cup with ice out of the ice machine. The inspector told the person in charge that only food personnel were allowed in the kitchen.
"Persons unnecessary to the food establishment operation are not allowed in the food preparation, food storage, or warewashing areas, except that brief visits and tours may be authorized by the person in charge if steps are taken to ensure that exposed food; clean equipment, utensils, and linens; and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles are protected from contamination," according to the inspection report.
