Northern Virginia's work-week weather forecast offers a midweek surprise, according to the National Weather Service and other forecasters.

STERLING, VA—After a mostly cloudy Monday, Northern Virginia's weather for the work week is expected to feature a lot of sun but also colder temperatures after an unusually warm Tuesday. That's the word from the National Weather Service and other area forecasting outlets.

Midweek will bring the big change as the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang points out: "Skies should trend sunnier Wednesday, but temperatures trend noticeably cooler as a dip in the jet stream moves over us. Highs in the low-to-mid 40s are seasonably cold, but feel colder than that with gusty winds from the northwest."

Monday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Northeast wind around 7 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon.

Monday Night: A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36. Southeast wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Tuesday: A slight chance of rain before noon, then a chance of showers after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 58. Southwest wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 43.
