Snow, Rain Mix Through Monday Afternoon

The National Weather Service predicts a wintry mix for the Fredericksburg area.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the cities of Fredericksburg and Culpeper and the counties of Orange, Culpeper, Spotsylvania, Stafford and Southern Fauquier.

The wintry mix of snow and rain which began late Sunday afternoon is expected to continue overnight.  Temperatures will remain above freezing, generally in the mid to upper 30s.  "This means most roads in these areas will be wet or slushy, while about one inch of snow may accumulate on elevated and grassy surfaces," the NWS said.

The rain and snow should change to all rain after 3 p.m. Monday.  A high of 39 degrees is predicted.  North winds at about 11 miles-per-hour could gust as high as 21 miles-per-hour.  Little or no snow accumulation is expected through the day Monday, the NWS said.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are mobilizing at midnight Sunday in the Fredericksburg area and the western end of the Middle Peninsula to clear and treat roads in preparation for the morning.

"Crews will target Interstate 95 and primary roads first, keeping these lanes open for travel during the morning rush hour," VDOT said.

VDOT urges motorists to use caution and stay alert for slick or icy road conditions, especially on bridges, ramps and overpasses, which can freeze first.
