FREDERICKSBURG, VA— We all know student athletes who also bring their A-game to other parts of their lives.
Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know the individual stories behind the leaderboard.
This submission comes from Tiffany Klotz who nominated Emma. Tiffany is Emma's mother and has been proud to see her grow and excel on the field and off of it.

Why do you believe the star student athlete should be recognized?
I would like to recognize Emma as a phenomenal field hockey goalie and team captain for Fredericksburg Academy in Fredericksburg, VA. I have had the pleasure of witnessing Emma develop her skills through rigorous practice, training and conditioning over the past 6 years. She has also had the opportunity to develop her goalie skills by playing travel field hockey with High Voltage and competes in USA Field Hockey Tournaments throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. What I admire most about Emma is, not only her determination for defending the goal, but also her dedication for building a solid team. As a team captain, she ensures that her teammates have productive practice and equal opportunity to develop in their position, which continues to make the team stronger. As a result, Fredericksburg Academy Varsity Field Hockey Team won the D-2 VISAA State Championship in 2021 in a goalie shootout and finished State Runner-Up in 2022. Due to Emma's hard work, she has been recruited to play D-1 field hockey as a goalie for Virginia Commonwealth University in 2023, where she will study biomedical engineering. I have had the pleasure of watching Emma turn challenges into learning opportunities and I have seen her maintain a positive attitude even in moments of defeat. As her mom, I take great pleasure knowing many of the things she has learned from playing field hockey will carry with her throughout her life and only add to her continued success. I could not be prouder of all she has accomplished.
What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star student athlete?
During her Junior Year, Emma participated in "Exhibit", which is an immersion program at Fredericksburg Academy, to learn about an industry that she was interested in studying. Emma was interested in learning about prosthetic devices to be able help people with disabilities interact better in the world. Emma did 40 hours of observation at Hanger Clinic, a prosthetic company, and 40 hours of hands-on learning. During her time at Hanger Clinic, she learned how to make a prosthetic leg. Through Exhibit, Emma was able to see how prosthetic devices help patients do more of the things that they love and have a more fulfilling life.
Keep up the great work, Emma 12th grade!
