Timm: Fundraising "My Responsibility"

Spotsylvania sheriff candidate says he should have researched the legality of two fundraisers before proceeding.

Spotsylvania Sheriff candidate Lt. Col. Michael Timm says that he should have done his homework before conducting two fundraisers which turned out to be illegal. Spotsylvania Commonwealth's Attorney William Neely recommended that the State Board of Elections fine Timm's campaign $50 for the violations. The State Board of Elections has yet to issue a final verdict in the case, and no fine has yet been paid, according to Timm.

"Ultimately, I claim responsibility for it as a candidate," said Timm in an interview yesterday. "I should have investigated that further and made some sort of determination as to whether it was a violation."

The other fundraiser in question is a "Historical Ride Poker Run" on May 7. Participants paid between $10 and $20 for the privilege of touring from point to point collecting playing cards. The riders with the best hands at the end of the day won cash prizes.

Timm said that the raffle raised between $50-$60 for his campaign. He also reports that the idea for the poker run originated from supporters working within the Sheriff's Office motor unit and traffic services unit.

Since the start of the year, Timm's campaign has generated $18,289 in contributions over $100, according to campaign finance reports. After expenses, his total campaign balance at the end of June stood at $8,930.

Timm also pointed out that his campaign has given generously to community groups.

"Did I do something wrong, yes, I admit that now that I know," said Timm. "But I've given back ten fold to charitable causes."

His opponent Roger Harris has raised a bit more than $30,000 in contributions over $100 during that same time. After expenses, his total campaign balance at the end of June stood at $17,598.
