Train Flattens Garage In Fredericksburg Derailment: Authorities

The five-car derailment damaged a concrete wall, vehicles and garages, completely flattening one, authorities said.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — A CSX freight train derailment Saturday night in Fredericksburg damaged garages, vehicles and a concrete wall, authorities said.

Police responded shortly before 9 p.m. to the 400 block of Cobblestone Drive, where they found five train cars had derailed, causing a sound wall to collapse into four garages, completely flattening one, according to authorities, who said two vehicles and a motorcycle were also damaged.

CSX was alerted to stop all freight and commuter trains, authorities said, noting that there were no injuries or hazardous material leaks.

"CSX appreciates the swift response of the Fredricksburg City first responders," the rail company said in a prepared statement. "The safety of response personnel and the surrounding community is our top priority as we work to recover the derailed cars and work to completely restore the area. The cause of the incident is under investigation."

Fire officials were at the scene Sunday morning, at which point two of the derailed cars had been removed, with the others expected to be gone by the end of the day, according to authorities.
