UMW’s Rylie Vann Earns Statewide ‘Scholar Of The Year’ Award
The graduating senior earned the prestigious honor for her creativity and drive across multiple academic and campus roles.

Rylie Vann, a senior at the University of Mary Washington (UMW) in Fredericksburg, was named the 2025 Scholar of the Year by the Virginias Collegiate Honors Council (VCHC). The award, one of the most prestigious honors given to students in Virginia and West Virginia, recognizes outstanding scholarship, integrity and leadership. Rylie, a double major in communication and digital studies and theatre, was selected following a competitive review of transcripts, recommendations and personal essays submitted by top honors students across both states.
Rylie’s academic work spans three capstone projects, including an analysis of stereotyping in reality TV for her communication and digital studies major and a hands-on role as production electrician for “Nunsense” with UMW Theatre. Her third capstone, completed through the Honors Program, resulted in a “Production Electrician Guidebook” to support future students. She has also served as a leader within the City as Text™ curriculum, helping Honors students explore the Fredericksburg area through immersive learning experiences.
In addition to her academic achievements, Rylie has contributed to the UMW community as a peer mentor and campus radio deejay. She accepted the Scholar of the Year award at the 2025 VCHC Conference, where she also presented one of her capstone projects.
With a wide range of interests and a track record of excellence, Rylie has made her mark at UMW — and whatever path she follows next, she’s sure to keep shining.
The future is certainly looking bright in Fredericksburg! If you know another Star Student making an impact, nominate them today to be featured on Patch!
