UMW Volleyball Starts Season off Right

Squad wins two games at Harrisonburg tournament.

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team started the season on a good note, winning a pair of victories at the Eastern Mennonite University Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va. At the tournament, they bested Mary Baldwin in three sets before going on to take Philadelphia Bible College in five sets. The Eagles now stand at 2-0 on the year. 

Senior setter Katie Shiflett had nine digs and 22 assists, Kaitlynn Wickersham had eight digs, and Tola Abedanjo had seven digs and six kills against Mary Baldwin. Both Kayla Crawford and Laura Gomez each had four kills for the Eagles. 

The Eagles topped Philly Bible in five, winning 25-20, 20-25, 21-25, 15-9. Shiflett had 52 assists, seven kills and 15 digs. Abebanjo had 25 kills and 21 digs. Gomez racked up 16 kills and Karissa Herrick and Wickersham each had eight kills. Christine Tran and Wisckersham added 15 and 21 digs, respectively.

The Eagles continue the tournament at Eastern Mennonite on Saturday.
