Unattended Kids Lead to Mom's Arrest

A Spotsylvania mother was charged with felony child neglect after leaving her children alone on a neighborhood street.

A neighbor's concern over three unsupervised children led police to arrest their mother for felony child neglect over the weekend in Spotsylvania County.

Around 6:20 p.m. on July 24, Spotsylvania Sheriff Sgt. Adam Assur responded to Club Cart Circle after receiving reports of possible child neglect. Upon arriving, an unidentified neighbor told him that as she was leaving for work, she heard a teenager cursing and standing next to a car. Standing on top of the car was a four-year-old. In the rear of the car, a two-year-old was fastened into a car seat. The car was not running, and all the windows were down.

Noting the heat, the neighbor asked where their parents were, but she could not determine an answer. Out of concern, she went inside her house and returned to the children with water.

She then searched door to door for the parents of the children, eventually locating the mother in another house on a different street in the neighborhood.

Once located, Assur arrested the mother, 31-year-old Nicole Burner, and charged her with felony child neglect. She was held under a $7,500 bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail. The children were turned over to Nicole's father.
