Virginia Election Results 2016: Hillary Clinton Wins Virginia

State home to Hillary Clinton's running mate turned out to be a challenge for the Democratic ticket. Here are the latest results.

The contentious presidential election between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton provided to divide the state of Virginia just as narrowly as it has the rest of the country.

National media outlets are projecting that Clinton will win Virginia, but hours after polls closed in a state she was expected to win easily just weeks ago. NBC News and Fox News have called the race.

With 96 percent of the vote counted, Clinton leads the vote total in Virginia with 1,689,647 votes to Trump's 1,632,802 votes. See national results.

Trump made a last-minute, late-night stop in Leesburg on Sunday, but Northern Virginia has appeared to be pretty solid ground for the Clinton camp.

Voters are making a pick for president, with Democrat Clinton and Republican Trump sharing the ballot with Libertarian Gary Johnson, Green Party candidate Jill Stein and independent Evan McMullin. Clinton has led in polls in Virginia throughout the election cycle, but Trump has closed the gap in recent weeks.

High-profile voters in others states have received attention for their ballot-box selfies, but selfies are allowed in Virginia voting booths.

Even if you don't live in the 10th Congressional District, you probably are ready for the race to be over between Rep. Barbara Comstock, a Republican, and Democratic challenger LuAnn Bennet. Campaign ads have been airing nonstop between the two campaigns in what may be one of the most closely watched congressional races in the country.

Federal election observers from the Justice Department were monitoring polling centers in Prince William and Fairfax counties on Tuesday.
