What's Open, Closed For New Year's 2025 In Frederickburg

As 2025 begins, there will be various closures and schedule changes for the New Year's holiday in Fredericksburg.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — After closures during the Christmas holiday, residents will get more a week later as they count down to 2025.

From Jan. 19-25, UMW’s James Farmer Multicultural Center hosts a collection of events in honor of MLK. This year’s theme is, “We Must Learn to Live Together…” and is inspired by King’s message for unity across differences.

Children from the Fredericksburg area are invited to MLK Kids Day, 3-4 p.m., on Sunday, Jan. 19, at James Monroe High School. Sponsored by the Partnership for Excellence, the event includes games, activities, and crafts to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP, will be the keynote speaker at The University of Mary Washington's MLK celebration on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m.,

MLK Jr. Day of Service is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 25, from 1-4 p.m. in the Chandler Room in the Cedric Rucker University Center, 1601 College Ave. in Fredericksburg. Register here: bit.ly/umwmlk25.

NAACP Fredericksburg Branch’s 2025 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast takes place on Monday, Jan. 20, 9-11 a.m., at the Fredericksburg Convention Center at 2371 Carl D Silver Parkway in Fredericksburg. Tickets can be ordered online.

There will be no mail delivery. FedEx will have modified services on MLK Day, while its Freight, Office, Critical, and Logistics divisions will be open as usual. UPS will be closed for the day, but limited locations and its Express Critical service will be available.

Banks will be closed and both the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ will have the day off.

Retail stores, restaurants and many other businesses are open as usual, although some, including Patch, observe MLK Day as a paid holiday.

  • City of Fredericksburg government offices: Closed on Monday, Jan. 20.
  • Stafford County government offices: Closed on Monday, Jan. 20
  • Spotsylvania County government offices: Closed on Monday, Jan. 20.
  • Post offices and mail: Closed on Monday, Jan. 20.
  • Fredericksburg City Public Schools: Closed on Monday, Jan. 20.
  • Stafford County Public Schools: Closed on Monday, Jan. 20.
  • Spotsylvania County Public Schools: Closed on Monday, Jan. 20.
  • Local and state courts: Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court are closed on Closed on Monday, Jan. 20.
  • VRE: The Virginia Railway Express will operate under a Planned "S" Schedule on Monday, Jan. 20.
  • Fredericksburg Regional Transit will not provide transit services on Jan. 20.
  • Libraries: All library locations will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20.
  • Trash Collection: Trash and recycling collection will occur on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 20. This is because the holiday does not affect curbside collection in Fredericksburg.
  • Recycling/Landfill: The Belman Road Recycling Center and the Stafford Landfill will be open Monday, Jan. 20, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
