Woman Injured Jumping From Moving Van

Driver arrested after striking fleeing passenger following argument.

Fredericksburg police arrested a motorist after a passenger he was arguing with jumped out of his moving vehicle and was struck by his car.

The incident occurred on August 3 at about 9:45 p.m. at the Kentucky Fried Chicken at 302 Hanson Avenue. A KFC employee told police that he saw a young woman fall from a white van before being struck by the van in the parking lot. Police say the van left the scene, but the witness was able to note some of the license plate numbers and called 911.

When police arrived on the scene, the victim, a 22-year-old woman, told police that she jumped from the passenger side of the van after the suspect driver, 57-year-old Spotsylvania resident Eugene Cunningham, refused to stop the van and let her out. The victim was trying to leave the car as a result of an argument, however police say that they were unable to determine the nature of the dispute.

"Our victim was not entirely cooperative," said city police spokesperson Natatia Bledsoe in an interview. "I'm sure there's a backstory or something going on there, but I don't know what it is."

The victim was found with minor cuts and bruises on the left side of her body. She told police that she didn't think she had been run over, but that she had been hit by the car as it drove away. She refused to be taken to the hospital for further examination.
