Fairfax School-Based COVID Vaccine Clinics For Ages 5-11 Start Nov. 16

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — The Fairfax County Health Department is partnering with Fairfax County Public Schools to offer COVID-19 vaccine clinics for children ages 5 to 11.

The clinics will be open to all children 5 to 11, regardless of whether they are a FCPS student, private school student, or homeschooled student. Because the vaccine dose is smaller for ages 5 to 11, vaccines will not be available at those events for children ages 12 and older. Appointments will not be required, as registration will happen on site.

"Schools play an important role in our community and offer a familiar and convenient setting to equitably reach and vaccinate children," stated Dr. Gloria Addo-Ayensu, the director of the Fairfax County Health Department. "We are pleased to collaborate with FCPS in this effort and hope families who have not yet found an appointment for their children will take advantage of these opportunities to get them vaccinated."

The first school-based clinics are scheduled from Nov. 16 through Jan. 7. Clinics will initially be held after school hours during evenings and weekends. Vaccinations are free, but a parent or another adult is required to attend.

Families can also find appointments through their children's doctor, pharmacies, grocery stores, urgent care facilities, health department vaccination centers, and the Inova Center for Personalized Health at 8100 Innovation Park Drive, Fairfax. When seeking appointments, families should search for the Pfizer pediatric vaccine since it is the only vaccine authorized for ages 5 to 11.
