FORT HUNT, VA — The new school year is quickly approaching, and families are available to help families prepare for the first day at Fairfax County Public Schools and Alexandria City Public Schools.
The first day of school for most students in Fairfax County and City of Alexandria is Monday, Aug. 21.
Heading into the upcoming school year, some dates are subject to change. Here is the list of dates to know for this school year:

- Aug. 21: First day of school
- Sept. 1-4: Labor Day holiday break
- Sept. 16: Rosh Hashanah observance, begins sundown Sept. 15 to sundown on Sept. 17
- Sept. 25: Yom Kippur holiday
- Oct. 9: Indigenous Peoples’ Day student holiday/staff development day
- Nov. 1-2: All Saints Day - Día de los Muertos observance
- Nov. 3: Early release
- Nov. 6: Student holiday/staff planning day
