Inova Mount Vernon Hosts Region's First Post-Acute Care Hospital

HYBLA VALLEY, VA — Residents of the greater Mount Vernon area are within the closest distance of the region's first-of-a-kind hospital for people needing critical care after the intensive care unit.

Inova Health System held a ribbon cutting Tuesday for its new post-acute care specialty hospital in partnership with Select Medical. The specialty hospital serves critically ill patients who need extended care but no longer need the intensive care of an acute care hospital.

The first patients will be welcomed on Tuesday, May 23.

"As the patient population requiring specialty care continues to grow, we are pleased to partner with Inova to provide post-ICU inpatient recovery services in Northern Virginia," said Miriam Deemer, regional president of the critical illness recovery hospital division at Select Medical. "Together, we will help patients regain their ability to breathe, eat, think, talk and walk independently so they may return to their home and community."

This 32-bed hospital serves patients recovering after intensive care unit stays, including those with chronic, critical illnesses, complications from surgery, or post-trauma conditions. It will also provide ongoing treatment for pulmonary conditions, neurological disorders, cardiac conditions, or renal disorders.

Before the specialty hospital opened, patients needing post-acute care had to be transferred to hospitals in Charlottesville, Richmond or outside of Virginia. The five Inova hospitals in Northern Virginia will be able to transfer patients to the specialty hospital at Inova Mount Vernon.
