Mount Vernon Trail Bridge Work To Reduce Northbound GW Parkway To 1 Lane

BELLE HAVEN, VA — Mount Vernon Trail users as well as drivers on the George Washington Memorial Parkway will be impacted by trail bridge replacement starting Monday, May 15 south of Alexandria City.

The National Park Service announced it will replace Bridges 23 and 24 on the Mount Vernon Trail in the Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve near Belle Haven Park. The bridges will be widened from 10 to 14 feet, while Bridge 23 will get pedestrian safe handrails and a renovated bench and overlook.

The construction will happen in two phases. The Bridge 24 replacement will start on May 15 and be completed around July. Bridge 23 work will happen between July 2023 and April 2024.

Users of the trail will be detoured using the northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway. The parkway will be reduced to one lane in the northbound direction with temporary concrete barriers separating road and trail users.
