PNC Parkway Classic Zips Into Alexandria This Sunday
Runners will sprint through Old Town and the George Washington Memorial Parkway for the Parkway Classic on Sunday, Nov. 7.
FORT HUNT, VA — Runners will be sprinting up the George Washington Memorial Parkway and into Alexandria Sunday for the PNC Parkway Classic.
Formerly known as the George Washington Parkway Classic, the PNC Parkway Classic will happen on Sunday, Nov. 7 with a 5K, 10-mile race, and kid's dash. The race is a popular event with local runners, offering scenic views of the parkway and Old Town Alexandria.
The 5K will kick off at 7 a.m., while the 10-mile race starts at 8 a.m. Both events will start and finish at Oronoco Bay Park. The 10-mile race heads south on Union Street, right on Franklin Street and south on Washington Street continuing into Fairfax County on the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Runners will continue south on the parkway and turn around between Morningside Lane and Wellington Road in Fort Hunt. The course will follow the same route north back to Oronoco Bay Park.

The 5K is a shorter course from Oronoco Bay Park down Union Street, right on Franklin Street and south on Washington Street. Once runners reach the Beltway, they will turn around and follow the same route back to Oronoco Bay Park.
The 600-meter kid's dash begins at 10:30 a.m. for children 12 and under at Waterfront Park. Each participant will receive a special race bib and a finisher medal.

Drivers should expect road closures on the parkway and other parts of the during the race Sunday morning. In the City of Alexandria, the following road closures will begin at 6 a.m.: Union Street between Pendleton Street and Franklin Street; Franklin Street between S. Union Street and S. Washington Street; S. Washington Street from Franklin Street to the Fairfax County line. Drivers will not be able to enter the City of Alexandria from Fairfax County on the George Washington Memorial Parkway during the race. The ramp from Interstate 495 to Church Street will also be closed for the race. Starting at 7 a.m. to noon, Pendleton Street will be closed from N. Fairfax Street through N. Union Street to Oronoco Street. Parking restrictions will be in effect along the race route.
The PNC Parkway Classic is hosted by Pacers Running. The event will support Together We Bake, Rebuilding Together DC/Alexandria and the Dunbar Alexandria-Olympic Boys & Girls Club through direct donation opportunities. Race results and award winners will be shared after the race.
