HYBLA VALLEY, VA — It's been over a month since the speed limit was lowered on a large portion of Richmond Highway in Fairfax County, and Patch wants to know your thoughts on the lower speed limit and road safety.

Richmond Highway is the main highway in this southeastern corridor of Fairfax County, connecting communities like Huntington, Groveton, Hybla Valley, Mount Vernon, Fort Belvoir and Lorton. The speed limit was reduced on May 23 from 45 to 35 mph between the Capital Beltway/Alexandria city limits and Jeff Todd Way/Mount Vernon Memorial Highway.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said the change was needed because of a high crash rate found during a study of the 45 mph speed limit. In particular, the study team found a higher prevalence of pedestrian and bicycle crashes and speed-related crashes between Buckman Road/Mount Vernon Highway and the Alexandria city limits compared to other sections of Richmond Highway.
