FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — The bivalent COVID-19 vaccine boosters, which were updated to address omicron subvariants, are being offered by the Fairfax County Health Department as of Wednesday.

The updated boosters from Pfizer and Moderna focus on the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of omicron, as well as the original strain of COVID-19. The BA.5 subvariant accounts for up to 90 percent of current COVID-19 cases in the U.S., according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

People 12 and older are eligible for Pfizer's bivalent COVID-19 booster, and people 18 and older are eligible for Moderna's booster. According to the Fairfax County Health Department, the booster can be given the same time as a seasonal flu shot, which is recommended in the fall before peak flu season.
