West Potomac Baseball Wins District Title For 2nd Straight Year
The baseball and softball teams claimed victory in their championship games on Friday.
The West Potomac baseball team is moving on to regionals after claiming the district title for the second consecutive year.
The Wolverines defeated T.C. Williams High School 9-0 on Friday night to win the Gunston District title. Last year, the team won the district title for the first time since 1994.
Friday's victory saw senior right-handed pitcher Jimmy Curley throw a three-hit shutout, striking out 15 and walking none. He ended up with a stunning 81.6 percent strike performance and just 14 balls in seven innings.

The offense was led by Justin Bassett with two RBIs, three stolen bases and two runs. Jacob Trumbo had two RBIs and Liam Airey had an RBI, run and double.
A key moment in the bottom of the third led West Potomac to dominate the rest of the game. The Wolverines' Jack Bachmore was running on a ground ball hit when the ball was thrown into him. This led to a collision, resulting in an injury to T.C. Williams' Titans’ Nathan Keough, the team's top player. He ended up leaving the game, and West Potomac took a 5-0 lead.

Before 2018, the team last won the district title in 1994 and went on to win the team's only Northern Region title. West Potomac beat Patriot District rivals Robinson Secondary School, Lake Braddock Secondary School and West Springfield High School. They could potentially meet again in this year's regionals.
West Potomac coach Jimmy Linza met a new milestone with the district title win. He has won district titles at Mount Vernon High School in 2004, Hayfield Secondary School in 2011 and now West Potomac. Linza became the coach after Jim Sullivan resigned in relation to a disagreement about the future of the team. That resignation came before two players were charged with hazing for an incident two years prior.
West Potomac's record now stands at 15-5 as they advance to the Occoquan Regionals. The Wolverines will begin regionals Friday, May 24 at 6:30 p.m. versus winner of the Tuesday, May 21 Hayfield and Robinson game.
West Potomac softball also claimed the district title in an 11-8 win over Hayfield Friday. In addition, Coach Kara Davis won Coach of the Year and Jennavieve Miller was named Player of the Year for the Gunston District. The following players received All-District Honors: for First Team, Allison Thompson (1st Base), Katie Jo Moery (2nd Base), Asia Reeves (3rd Base), Jennavieve Miller (Short Stop), Madison Kimberlin (Outfield), Rachel Hamer (Designated Player); for Second Team: Alana Yoder (Pitcher), Trystany Urdininea (Outfield).
