William “Bill” Fay Newell, 76, Of Alexandria
Obituary and service information is provided for William "Bill" Fay Newell, a longtime Alexandria resident.

William “Bill” Fay Newell (76) of Alexandria, VA entered eternal rest on January 24, 2022. Born July 27, 1945, in Jamestown, NY to his father Mead Everett Newell and mother Beatrice Berdina (Rothe) Newell. He grew up in Sherman NY and graduated from Sherman Central School in 1963. He attended Cornell University in Ithaca NY to study Agricultural Economics and subsequently completed graduate-level courses at Purdue University.
Bill is preceded in death by both parents, his older brother Edward “Ed” Mead Newell, his brother-in-law William Harvey Quay, and father-in-law William Joseph Dedloff.
Bill is survived by his wife Brenda of 47 years; his daughter Mary Helen Newell; two granddaughters Caitlyn and Amara; his sister JoAnn Edwards (Paul) of Alexandria, VA; Craig Dedloff (Laura) of St. Peters, MO; and Mark Dedloff (Sandra) of Knox, IN; and Kathy Abbey (Randy) of Knox, IN; and nieces Lisa Newell Garvey (Scott) of Derby, NY; Carol Quay Stiller (Karl) of Fairfax, VA; Susan Lynn Edwards of Parkton MD; Jennifer and Karen Abbey of Knox, IN; Jessica Wakefield (Michael) of Knox, IN; Lisa and Kattie Dedloff of St. Peters, MO, and nephews Randall Newell (Tracy) of Cleveland, and Ryan Dedloff (Brooke) of Greenville, OH; and mother-in-law Kattie May (Craigmile) Dedloff of Knox, IN.

Bill was a Mason and an active member of his fraternity Pi Kappa Phi. Bill’s first job was in Westminster PA involved with dairy pricing and utilized his knowledge about dairy farming. He and his wife moved to Washington DC in the 1980s to work as an Agricultural Economist at the Department of Agriculture (USDA), where he retired over 36 years later as a branch chief in the Dairy Program of the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) at USDA. He was part of an Alexandria-based bowling league and was a huge Capitals hockey fan, where he enjoyed his season tickets every year.
A local celebration of his life will be held on March 5, 2022, at 2:00 pm for family and friends at the Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home (1500 W Braddock Rd, Alexandria, VA 22302, phone (703) 998-9200, https://www.everlywheatley.com/), and he will be buried out of state at a family plot at a later date (TBD). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Bill to your favorite charity or the Yorker Museum (www.shermanny.org/yorker-museum).
