Herndon Parkway Remains Closed, Police Diverting Traffic: Update

HERNDON, VA — Parts of Herndon Parkway remain closed Thursday morning, following a a crash early Wednesday evening that knocked down telephone cables, according to a post on the Herndon Police Department's official Twitter account. The cleanup is expected to last into the afternoon.

The Outer Loop of Herndon Parkway was closed at Elden Street and police were diverting traffic left or right onto Elden Street on Thursday morning. However, drivers on Elden Street will not be able to turn onto the Outer Loop, according to police.

The Inner Loop remains closed at Palmer Drive, with police diverting traffic onto Palmer Drive. Police anticipate lengthy closures as cleanup work continues.

Herndon Police reported at 9:31 p.m., on Wednesday that the 600 block of Herndon Parkway/Palmer Drive was closed until further notice

At 6:39 p.m., police said the closure of Herndon Parkway had been extended to Maple Court, and at 5:32 p.m. that the public should expect a "lengthy closure" of Herndon Parkway as crews worked to clear downed cables in the roadway.

Police first reported at 5 p.m. that Herndon Parkway was closed in both directions at Palmer Drive due to an accident. Cables had been knocked down and motorists were advised to seek an alternate route.

WUSA9 Meteorologist Makayla Lucero posted a video of the scene at 5:49 p.m. on Twitter. She reported that the cables on the ground were telephone lines and that a Verizon crew was working to clear them.

Dominion Energy reported that 221 customers in the vicinity of the accident were without power due to the heavy storm that passed through the area around 5 p.m, on Wednesday. At 9:50 p.m., power was restored to all of the customers, according to Dominion Energy.

National Weather Services issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Northern Virginia early Wednesday evening. A flash flood warning was issued for some areas as a flood watch continues for the greater region.

The National Weather Service said a severe thunderstorm was located over Oakton near Fairfax at 4:11 p.m. and is moving east. The severe thunderstorm warning applies to northwestern Fairfax County and City of Fairfax until 5 p.m. Wednesday. This includes Centreville, Reston, Annandale, South Riding, Herndon, Fairfax, Vienna, Lowes Island, Mantua, Pimmit Hills, the American Legion Bridge, Potomac, Burke, Oakton, Sterling, Chantilly, Tysons Corner, Wolf Trap, Great Falls and Merrifield.
