Dulles, National, BWI: One Of These Is Most Expensive Airport To Fly Out Of In The US

One of Baltimore-D.C.'s three airports is the most expensive to fly out of in the U.S., according to Department of Transportation data.

DULLES, VA — Washington Dulles International Airport is not only the most expensive airport to fly out of in the D.C.-Baltimore area, it's the most expensive airport for travelers to leave from in the entire U.S., according to a report.

FinanceBuzz, an informational website that provides financial advice to its customers, looked at U.S. Department of Transportation's airfare data in April 2023 from the 45 busiest airports in the U.S.

The study found that U.S. airfare increased by 14.1 percent from 2021 to 2022, when adjusted for inflation. On average, fares at the 45 busiest airports rose $50.67 over that same timeframe.

Airfare at Dulles rose by $86.70 over the last year. Previously, Dulles was one of only two airports with an average fare over $400. Now, 13 of the busiest airports in the U.S. average fares above $400, according to FinanceBuzz's report.

Here are the five most expensive airports to fly out of based on FinanceBuzz's analysis:

The average airfare at D.C.'s other two major airports was much lower, according to FinanceBuzz.

Fares at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) averaged $379.01, which was $63.74 higher than in the previous year. At Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), the average fare rose by $37.76 over the previous year to $351.26.

DCA and BWI had the 22nd and 30th most expensive airfares, respectively, on FinanceBuzz's list.

Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas had the lowest fares, according to the study. The airport's average airfare was $264.24, which was a $16.71 increase over the previous year.

FinanceBuzz calculated the average airfares based on domestic itinerary airfares. The fares were based on the value of the ticket. This included what the airline charged and any taxes or fees collected at the time of the purchase. Additional fees for optional services, such as baggage fees, were not included in the fares. Likewise, frequent-flyer or "zero fares" or unusually high reported fares were not included.
