Dec 16, 2015: The Council for the Arts of Herndon joins with the Dranesville Supervisor’s office every holiday season to gather new shoes for children at Hutchison Elementary School in Herndon. Hutchison is a Title I school serving many students with challenging social and economic issues. Principal Judy Baldwin told CAH Executive Director Signe Friedrichs today, “Staff and teachers will notice children who are wearing open sandals or shoes that are falling apart. We can provide for them with these donations. Last year this was especially bad since it was extremely cold, and this year, we are seeing the same thing happening. Winter is just starting now, and we know it will get worse. This is such a blessing for kids in our school.”

In conjunction with Supervisor Foust’s Office, The Council for the Arts of Herndon collected 25 pairs of new shoes and $615 in gift cards.

Hutchison Elementary School is a special favorite of the Council for the Arts of Herndon, which in addition to the holiday shoe drive, also provides arts enrichment programs including theatrical productions for children with NextStop Theatre, as well as ceramics classes. Although the school faces many challenges, Principal Judy Baldwin works hard to make a clean, safe and inviting learning environment for our children.
