Dulles Airport Manager Leaving To Run Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport

DULLES, VA — After serving 14 years with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, Mike Stewart announced Monday he was stepping down from his roles as MWAA vice president and manager of Washington Dulles International Airport. He will become the executive director of Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport in September, according to a release.

During his tenure, Stewart led Dulles Airport through many challenging moments, including the diversion of 40 international flights in 2018 after New York's JFK Airport was forced to close due to snow, and public health travel restrictions caused by Ebola and COVID-19. He also ran the airport during upgrades to the facility and the construction of Metrorail's Silver Line to the Dulles campus.

“I’ve been extremely fortunate to have worked with so many talented people at the Airports Authority and having the opportunity to work on so many different aspects of the aviation business,” Stewart said, in the release. “I’ll miss the challenges and rewards of leading one of the busiest international airports in the world. I thank the leadership and my colleagues at the Airports Authority, and I look forward to working with a great team in Roanoke.”

Stewart has been the manager of Dulles Airport since 2017. Previously, he had served in a number of management positions with MWAA, including vice president of Airline Business Development d manager of Dulles Airport Administration.
